Abstract
The purpose of this proposal is to bring together a new facility to provide state of the art capability to analyse and control functional materials at the nanoscale to underpin and drive forward critical materials research in energy materials, photonics, metamaterials and electronics. It is intended to use this facility to support approximately 180 materials researchers at the University of St Andrews and extend this capability to users outside St Andrews in both academia and industry. It builds on the outstanding record of St Andrews in high quality research and investment in advanced materials research by the University, SFC, EPSRC, and industry as well as our experience of sharing our facilities with external users.

| Description | A range of new drug targets, molecules for clean synthesis and light harvesting/converting systems have been discovered and refined. The strategic equipment grant "Designer oxides" has formed the nucleus of a new Centre at the University of St Andrews, which combines a set of unique research infrastructures, including angular resolved photoemission spectroscopy and low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. It has created a unique centre to study the emergent states of quantum materials and create and design novel quantum materials in thin film form, ultimately to make them amenable for device fabrication and to enable transformative advances in information processing. First results from the research enabled through this equipment have already appeared in leading journals, and demonstrate the power of our integrated approach to study quantum materials. We have been able to show how emergent states change with reduced dimensionality, showing new routes to control them and make them useful for potential future device applications. Elucidation via computational modelling of the chemical rules governing the evolution of planetary ices (L. J. Conway et al., publication 5 in the list above). Development of an experimental method to read out the local carrier concentration in a moiré superlattice based on optical activity of interlayer excitons (H. Baek et al., publication 6 in the list above). |

| Description | The equipment has supported a range of collaborative projects with industry eg drug design, catalyst development, energy storage and conversion systems This grant has formed the heart-piece of the Centre for Designer Quantum Materials, a centre which has attracted substantial funding from ESPRC, ERC, Leverhulme, and the Royal Society as well as talented scientists (e.g. on an EPSRC fellowship) from outside the UK. The Centre provides a unique combination of infrastructure, bringing UK research on designer quantum materials to the forefront at an internationally competitive level. The Molecular Beam Epitaxy System funded through this grant enables layered growth of designer oxide heterostructures, with control over the precise composition of each layer. It opens the door to exploitation of the exciting emergent properties of transition metal oxides for novel electronics exploiting these, a route which has been suggested in the Roadmap of the International Semiconductor Technology Group as a possible way to further increase the performance of information technology. The centre has attracted substantial attraction in the press, with an opening that has been covered by STV and BBC, and which was featured by BBC shortly after its opening. The equipment of the Centre has a lifetime of a couple of decades and more, and we are expecting its socio-economic impacts to be realized only in the coming decades. • Narrative Impact (a) Workshop facilities (Edinburgh) These are housed at the University of Edinburgh, include the following equipment: o SLX 355 (CNC lathe); o SMX 3500 (CNC milling machine); o Stratasys Objet30 Prime (3D printer). This allows rapid prototyping or machining of custom experimental apparatus, as well as facilitating skills development in practical skills and technical design. This equipment is used for the training of CM-CDT students, and also supports the research of several of the CM-CDT's constituent research groups. (b) Computer cluster (Edinburgh) Currently this cluster consists of eight active nodes (512 CPU cores); six of these nodes (384 cores) were part of the original capital equipment funding. Usage remains high, with 43 users registered and 19 users active since March 2021. In total, just over 120 years' worth of CPU time were used for calculations in that time. (c) Atomic layer deposition equipment (St Andrews) The Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) system continues to be used regularly by PhD students and PDRAs. Aligned PhD student Mohammad Biabanifard, working with Prof. Andrea DiFalco, has recently started using the ALD regularly to develop a fabrication approach for holographic metasurfaces in the visible range. This work will be a key part of his PhD and it is expected that it will lay the basis for future publications and knowledge transfer activities. The work is in the preliminary stages and hasn't yet produced any publications. (d) Hydraharp picosecond event timer The Hydraharp is used in several laboratories to measure correlation functions of photons emitted by quantum dots or entangled photons from parametric downconversion processes. Several CDT students have made use of this equipment during their training or their research. In particular, CM-CDT students Zak Koong, Aidan Campbell, Guillem Ballesteros-Garcia, Micaela Laini, Artur Branny, and Eleanor Scerri have used / are using it heavily during their PhDs. Additional PhD students at Heriot-Watt University that have used it heavily include Raphael Picard, Daniel White, Muhammad Junaid Arshad, Maximilian Kögl, Daniel Forbes, and Ted Santana. We estimate that 15 publications and around 30 conference talks have been based wholly or partly on research carried out using the Hydraharp equipment. The femtosecond laser equipment is regularly used to measure TADF materials from Eli's group by Abhishek, Stefan, Leon and Tomas Matulaitis, they use it at least two days a week, sometimes more. No external visitors in the past year but I did time-resolved PL measurements for the group of Dr. K. D. G. I. Jayawardena and Prof. S. R. P. Silva at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Surrey in April 2021 of the hybrid materials for X-ray detectors based on P3HT:PCBM blends with Bi2O3 nanoparticles and in P3HSe:PCBM blends. I used time-resolved PL quenching to determine domain sizes. I attach the published paper and they are preparing a new publication on morphology. Other internal measurements were on Jonathon's and Lethy's solar cell materials and devices. The femtosecond lab funded by the equipment grant has been used about 50% of time - much of it by users from Prof Zysman-Colman's group in chemistry, and as noted below to do measurements for researchers at the University of Surrey, leading to a paper. The work for St Andrews researchers has also led to papers included above. The grant for designer oxides has resulted in follow-on funding to investigate the antiviral properties of surface, to help fight the pandemic (the relevant grant is MR/V028464/1). |

| Description | This dataset contains the raw data for Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) Images, Cylcic Voltamomgrams (CV), UV-Vis spectra and Organic Field-Effect Transistor (OFET) devices present in the paper. Also included are Nuclear Magentic Resonance (NMR) and Thermal Gravametric Analysis (TGA) data. AFM images were generated using WSXM 5.0 are formatted in associated formats. CV, UV, TGA and OFET data are presented in .txt or .xls files that can be opened with typical graphing software, or created using OriginPro 2015 and saved in associated formats. NMR data is in the .fid or .xwp format. |
