Description Two new commercially useful device materials: Tin titanate and lead-palladium-titanate.
We have added a further new material with previously unreported ferroelectric properties, caesium niobium oxide, and have uncovered important structural information about another material, lanthanum tantalite which has potential as a high temperature piezoelectric.

Description We have fabricated and tested three new ferroelectric titanate materials: tin titanate, palladium-lead titanate, and ultra-tetragonal lead titanate. The latter compound has a polarization P of 238 microCoulombs/square centimeter, nearly twice that of anything previously known in nature. Since the size of such devices (e.g., for computer memories and cell phones) is 50% smaller if P is 50% larger, this may have immediate commercial applications. Prof. Scott previously was co-inventor and developer of ferroelectric memories, which are now a £100 million/year commercial market in Japan and the USA (subway fare cards, vending machines, cash points), and his present EPSRC project is to enhance such devices by making them smaller and hence use less power (longer battery life, more ecologically friendly).

Title Unidentified Phase Transition in Polar Lanthanum Tantalate (LaTaO4) 
Description The family of crystals with formula ABX4 represent a very interesting class of ferroelectrics that are extremely two-dimensional. Fluorides have been extensively researched but there is great potential for oxides of this class, such as LaTaO4, due to oxides being favoured for device applications. Studies have reported the evolution of morphologies of LaTaO4 with temperature, but one phase transition at ~200ºC is accompanied by an anomalously small peak in permittivity, which suggests the transition is unusual. Variable temperature XRD of this material has revealed a change in lattice parameters which coincide with the phase transition but this is suspected to be a consequence of a shift in oxygen positions. It is then suggested that by using HRPD, the change in oxygen positions can be observed across the phase transition and hence the structural distortion can be characterised.

PI Contribution We synthesised a new improper ferroelectric material which we hypothesised would exhibit the same complex domain structure as the hexagonal managanite improper ferroelectrics.
Collaborator Contribution Dr Ian MacLaren and his PhD student, Shane McCartan, carried out electron microscopy on our samples. The results of this analysis was included in two publications.
