Handheld quantum wireless for financial transactions

Lead Research Organisation: University of Oxford
Department Name: Engineering Science

Abstract

Mobile phones and handheld devices are increasingly being used for wireless financial transactions, and maintaining the
security of these is paramount. This work will combine a quantum secure wireless link with secure software to create a
demonstration of how quantum technologies can play a role in payments and other financial transactions. We will work on
both the physical hardware for the link, building on existing expertise, and the software that is required to enable the
transaction.

Planned Impact

The main impact of this project will be to Cognizant, who will gain expertise in the use of quantum technologies, and how
this can assist in providing future security. Cognizant has a wide range of end users across financial and other sectors, and
these will ultimately benefit from the knowledge that this project will generate.
As society moves away from cash transactions maintaining confidence in the security of wireless payments is vital, and this
project will build knowledge of the future systems that can contribute to this key goal.

Description A secure link, using quantum communications, was established between a handheld device and a static terminal. This might be used for 'contactless payment' in the future.
Exploitation Route This could be used as a basis for wireless payments secured by the use of Quantum Keys
Sectors Digital/Communication/Information Technologies (including Software)

Description The industrial partners gained increased knowledge of how to use handheld devices for securing transactions, and this allowed them to develop use cases with potential partners.
