EPSRC Hub in Quantum Computing and Simulation
Lead Research Organisation:
University of Oxford
Department Name: Engineering Science
Abstract
The EPSRC Quantum Computing and Simulation Hub will enable the UK to be internationally leading in Quantum Computing and Simulation. It will drive progress toward practical quantum computers and usher in the era where they will have revolutionary impact on real-world challenges in a range of multidisciplinary themes including discovery of novel drugs and new materials, through to quantum-enhanced machine learning, information security and even carbon reduction through optimised resource usage.
The Hub will bring together leading quantum research teams across 17 universities, into a collaboration with more than 25 national and international commercial, governmental and academic entities. It will address critical research challenges, and work with partners to accelerate the development of quantum computing in the UK. It will foster a generation of UK-based scientists and engineers equipped with the new skill sets needed to make the UK into a global centre for innovation as the quantum sector emerges. The Hub will engage with government and citizens so that there is a wide appreciation of the potential of this transformative technology, and a broad understanding of the issues in its adoption.
Hub research will focus on the hardware and software that will be needed for future quantum computers and simulators. In hardware we will advance a range of different platforms, encompassing simulation, near term quantum computers, and longer term fully scalable machines. In software the Hub will develop fundamental techniques, algorithms, new applications and means to verify the correct operation of any future machine. Hardware and software research will be closely integrated in order to provide a full-stack capability for future machines, enabled by the broad expertise of our partners. We will also study the architecture of these machines, and develop emulation techniques to accelerate their development.
Success will require close engagement with a wide range of commercial and government organisations. Our initial partners include finance (OSI), suppliers (Gooch & Housego, Oxford Instruments, E6), integrators and developers (OQC, QM, CQC, QxBranch, D-Wave), users from industry (Rolls-Royce, Johnson Matthey, GSK, BT, BP, TrakM8, Airbus, QinetiQ) and government (DSTL, NCSC), and other research institutions (NPL, ATI, Heilbronn, Fraunhofer). We will build on this strong network using Industry Days, Hackathons and targeted workshops, authoritative reports, and collaborative projects funded through the Hub and partners. Communications and engagement with the community through a range of outreach events across the partnership will inform wider society of the potential for quantum computing, and we will interact with policy makers within government to ensure that the potential benefits to the UK can be realised.
The Hub will train researchers and PhD students in a wide range of skills, including entrepreneurship, intellectual property and commercialisation. This will help deliver the skilled workforce that will be required for the emerging quantum economy. We will work with our partners to deliver specific training for industry, targeting technical, commercial and executive audiences, to ensure the results of the Hub and their commercial and scientific opportunities are understood.
The Hub will deliver demonstrations, new algorithms and techniques, spinout technologies, and contribute to a skilled workforce. It will also engage with potential users, the forthcoming National Centre for Quantum Computing, the global QC community, policy makers and the wider public to ensure the UK is a leader in this transformative new capability.

Description | The Hub in Quantum Computing and Simulation (QCS Hub) started on the 1st of December 2019, continuing from the predecessor NQIT Hub. We are a partnership of 17 Universities and more than 25 industrial and government partners (see www.qcshub.org). Our work is organized into three themes covering 'nearer term' so-called NISQ quantum computing, longer-term Universal Fault Tolerant (UFT), and Simulation themes. Findings in each of these areas is summarized below. NISQ theme: The NISQ theme is focused on demonstration of lab-scale prototypes, as well as development of 'next generation' devices. In ions, two Nature papers were published on device independent QKD and entangled clocks; these show the robust entanglement capability that Oxford have built up. More recently entanglement distillation between ion-traps has been demonstrated, a key building block in an optical networking scheme. In superconductors, 16 qubit devices have been measured, with low single-qubit errors (avg.0.07%) across the device. In photonics a paper that challenged the photonic supremacy claims of earlier processors was published. Notably, there was a demonstration of a blind quantum computing concept developed in our predecessor hub, NQIT, by the Oxford Ion trap team. UFT theme: The long-term goal of the field is the development of large-scale fault-tolerant machines; for this, solid-state qubits that can be fabricated using techniques compatible with silicon integrated circuit process technology, with the ability to scale and provide high qubit density, are attractive. In the past year work on writing qubits in diamond has continued, with good progress on creating the membrane structures that will ultimately be required to create a usable technology. In Silicon there is continued progress, with demonstration of elongated quantum dots, a key developmental step. Simulation theme: Hardware work within the Hub focuses on the use of waveguide-based photonic systems for simulation of industrially relevant processes, and simulations using cold-atoms. A large photonic chip, allowing experiments to scale, has been fabricated and is currently under evaluation. Efficient quantum dot sources have also been demonstrated. In software, there were a range of new results in areas including Quantum Machine Learning, Privacy Amplification and the scaling of QAOA, as well as further extension of the QuEST emulator towards a Quantum Virtual Machine. Work on surface codes has examined the effects of permanent defects in hardware elements, and work on verification and algorithms continued. |
Exploitation Route | There are a range of mechanisms across the Hub, and as we are at an early stage of the programme there are limited examples. In some cases work is being commercialised, or leading to joint development projects with industry and RTO's, notably NPL and the NQCC. There is one spinout that has been supported by the Hub formed since it started, and two spinouts in preparation. |

Description | The QCS Hub continued from its predecessor NQIT Hub, and commenced in December 2019 with a series of activities towards impact: 1. Encourage and support collaborations with industry in research and technology development 2. Encourage and support technology commercialisation We have highlighted spinout successes to our researchers, and ensured they have access to the advice they need. In specific cases we have helped with networking and ensuring that contact 3. Engage with end-users and help quantum readiness in the UK This is achieved through our own Partnership Resource Funding, and broader engagement activities. We have now allocated almost all of our Partnership resource, with 24 projects funded, and the first beginning to complete, with excellent results. There are a range of collaborations across industry and academia, and a wide range of topics addressed. Impact from these includes skills transfer, the generation of new technologies, and the ability to apply for further funding. In this regard we have assisted with partnering activities for Innovate UK calls and industry/academia contacts The Hub has a dedicated User Engagement Team to engage with prospective end-users to encourage this important part of the value chain to get quantum ready and to help provide early evidence of 'market pull' for the technology. The UE team engaged with companies in the chemical, pharmaceutical, aerospace, automotive, banking, insurance, business services and other sectors and a number of its contacts are now partners in ISCF projects or working with quantum system and software vendors to develop skills and explore applications relevant to their business including with one of the UK's main industry regulators to help it and the sector it regulates to become 'quantum ready'. Another essential part of User Engagement is to observe the technology and the sector as it develops, alert researchers to those developments and engage with organisations that are or want to learn more about the technology and the technological and economic developments in the UK. Our User Engagement strategy is now focused on building deeper industrial engagements, and in 2022 has evolved in alignment with the National Quantum Computing Centre's outreach work. We have continued to build deeper relationships with the Banking, Finance and Digital Regulatory space. Activities have included jointly organising several workshops and teaching sessions, including a deep dive review of financial use cases and assistance in scoping a recent Digital Regulation Cooperation Forum symposium on Quantum Technologies. We have continued to support industry events both in the UK (for example, the Quantum Technologies Annual Showcase), and internationally (particularly supporting the UK delegations to Quantum.Tech in Boston and Q2B in Silicon Valley, where we were played a substantial role in ensuring the quantum start-up community's presence). We have also engaged with academic partners beyond the Hub working closely with the Institute for Manufacturing at the University of Cambridge. This has led to a report into business process changes that Quantum Technologies are likely to bring to industry, with recommendations for how the UK should respond to these changes. We have also published several other reports, including an overview of quantum simulation and its applications, as well as one examining the international state of quantum information technologies research efforts and national approaches. |

Title | DE-MULTIPLEXER AND METHOD OF SEPARATING MODES OF ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIATION |
Description | A de-multiplexer (1) for separating two co-propagating modes of electromagnetic radiation includes a volume (2) having a path therethrough for receiving electromagnetic radiation, an input (8) for directing two co-propagating modes of electromagnetic radiation to be incident upon the volume, a control source (12) of electromagnetic radiation arranged to generate a time-dependent control field. The volume is arranged and the time-dependent control field is shaped such that, when the two co-propagating modes of electromagnetic radiation and the time-dependent control field are incident upon the volume contemporaneously, the time-dependent control field causes the volume to accept one of the two modes of electromagnetic radiation onto a mode of the volume without any parametric non-linear optical interaction taking place and to reflect or transmit the other of the two modes of electromagnetic radiation, so to spatially and/or temporally separate the two modes of electromagnetic radiation from each other. |

Title | RANDOM NUMBER GENERATOR |
Description | A method (300) for generating random numbers including: mixing (304) a bright quantum state in a first mode with a vacuum input (15), in a two mode transformation for mixing the first mode and an orthogonal second mode; after mixing, detecting (306) the intensity in the first mode, and the second mode; generating random numbers (312) based on the difference between the detected intensity of the first mode and the second mode; and simultaneously to generating random numbers, certifying the numbers as random, based on the sum of the detected intensity of the first mode and the second mode, wherein certifying confirms that the process by which the random numbers are generated is quantum in origin and so the numbers are random. |

Title | SUPERCONDUCTING QUANTUM COMPUTING CIRCUIT PACKAGE |
Description | A superconducting quantum computing circuit package (1). The package contains a substrate (2) on which a circuit is formed, the circuit including a plurality of circuit elements. The substrate (2) includes holes (8) arranged between the circuit elements which extend through a thickness of the substrate (2). The package also contains a holder (3) with a surface (9) on which the substrate (2) is received, and a cover (4) arranged on an opposite side of the substrate (2). The holder (3) and the cover (4) are formed from a metal and/or a superconductor. The holder (3) also contains projections (12) arranged on and projecting from the surface (9). The projections (12) protrude through the holes (8) in the substrate (2) and contact the cover (4) so to suppress electromagnetic modes in the frequency range of operation of the quantum computing circuit. |
