Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Sapsford D (2023) Circular economy landfills for temporary storage and treatment of mineral-rich wastes in Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Waste and Resource Management

Description Interviews with stakeholders suggest that there is support for the ASPIRE approach to developing waste repositories that can be used for resource extraction in the future. These could be designed to meet multiple policy objectives including biodiversity net gain, renewable energy generation and access to green spaces. There are, however, barriers to achieving this. These include current regulations covering landfill design and leachate management, uncertainty regarding the efficacy of the technology and potential risks. Similarly, engagement with people who live close to sites used for waste disposal suggest that there would be a greater public acceptability for more environmentally-friendly waste repositories, particularly if these also provided amenity space for the community.
