A microCT scanner for tracing dynamic metabolism in hard and soft tissues

Abstract

We aim to use this core equipment call to invest in a specialist x-ray CT scanner which has the capability and flexibility to measure both small and medium sized animals at microscopic length scales. The use of live animal imaging will promote a culture of improved laboratory animal welfare by negating sacrifice reliant approaches, and will enable us to support and grow a broad remit of research linking engineering and the physical sciences with biomedicine. Particular areas of interest include work on regenerative medicine and tissue engineering, materials, as well as drug delivery and the study of disease pathology. In addition to live animal work, high resolution x-ray imaging will also aid the development of more realistic tissue constructs, and will help to advance sophisticated 3D computer modelling. A key part of our investment strategy is to support our early career stage researchers by provision of a world class facility, and by enabling collaborative approaches and establishing groups of like minded researchers in User communities for the instrument. The new facility will also add value to our teaching programmes, including those of the new Harper and Keele Veterinary School.
