Technical Summary
The MRC Proximity to Discovery scheme awards universities funds to help develop new collaborations, and ways of exchanging knowledge and skills. The awards can be used to support activities that promote the value of academic-industry partnership, and enhance academic and industry researchers’ understanding of each other’s needs and capabilities. This may be through people exchanges, creation of technology demonstrators, showcase events, commercialisation workshops and ‘entrepreneurs in residence’ schemes. Such exchanges of knowledge and skills will boost the most fruitful collaborations between UK universities and life science companies.

Results and Impact | This one day event offered a comprehensive program of tours, presentations and lectures, providing fascinating insights into how research is benefiting industry and impacting upon lives. The expertise that was showcased spanned a range of health related disciplines from the cell to the community; from the elite athlete to multiple clinical groups; from the youngest to the oldest members of society. The breadth of research on display included drug discovery and diagnostic design, studying human behaviour through psychology and sport and exercise sciences which is ranked 1st in the UK for research quality. A pump-priming voucher competition to stimulate new collaborations was launched on the day. This has since led to the establishment of a number of new partnerships and projects. The main attendees were industry representatives, clinicians and academics. In addition, approximately 10 students from Liverpool's University Technical College also attended. |
