Sign language : an introduction to issues in research
Description | Following completion of the ESRC Deafness Cognition and Language Research Centre grant, DCAL was established on a continuing basis at UCL. It consists of a multidisciplinary team of linguists, psychologists and neuroscientists, and is the largest research centre in this field in Europe. We examine language, cognition and the brain from the unique perspective of deafness and deaf communication. This encourages a broader scientific perspective which leads to novel discoveries about language and cognition that could not be achieved from working with hearing people alone. We achieve this by bringing together a range of complementary scientific approaches and a diverse group of talented D/deaf and hearing scientists, support staff and students. Our research aims are: To determine how communication (signed, spoken, written) and cognition are shaped by deafness To use this information to further educational and clinical practice and to create societal impact |
Exploitation Route | The outcomes of DCAL's work have been and continue to be taken forward by academic, private, public, and third sector users across a wide range of activities, including sign language linguistics, the sociolinguistics of BSL and the Deaf community, language and cognitive development in deaf children, deaf education, developmental and acquired impairments in sign language users, cognitive neuroscience in relation to deafness, automated translation of sign language to written language, creation of language and cognitive assessments for other sign languages. |

Description | Our findings from both Phase 1 (2006-2010) and Phase 2 (2011-2017) which include normed sign language and speechreading assessments for both children and adults, are widely used by practitioners including educational and clinical psychologists, speech and language therapists, and educators. Our findings in relation to linguistic theory, the role of iconicity in language, and sign language and the brain continue to influence research in these fields. Research on the development of literacy in deaf children has had an important influence on education policy, and current development by the DfE of a GCSE in BSL draws heavily on our research on the learning of sign language. Other recent impacts associated with both Phases are reported in the DCAL II report of activities in Phase 2. |

Title | BSL Assessment Portal |
Description | The DCAL Assessment Portal provides on-line access to a collection of assessments of cognition, speech and language developed at DCAL. The website allows professionals concerned with developmental and clinical assessment of deaf children and adults to use our tests and norms. Additionally, the tests are available for use by researchers both within and outside DCAL. Data from the on-line tests are used to develop and update norms for these populations and provide opportunities for secondary data analysis. |
Type Of Material | Model of mechanisms or symptoms - human |
Year Produced | 2015 |
Provided To Others? | Yes |
Impact | We have already had numerous requests for assistance in adapting and translating the on-line assessment tools for use with other sign languages in Europe, China and the Americas. Several have already been completed and are currently being used by researchers in other countries as well as in the UK |

Title | DCAL Research Data Archive |
Description | The DCAL Research Data Archive holds the data outputs of the UCL Deafness, Cognition and Language Research Centre. The vast majority of research studies on language and cognition are based on languages which are spoken and heard. DCAL's research provides a unique perspective on language and thought by placing sign languages and Deaf people in the centre of our understanding of language and communication. DCAL's research since 2006 has contributed substantially to the recognition that deafness is an important model for exploring questions in linguistics, cognitive sciences and neuroscience. All metadata for the projects in this archive is openly available. Some data is restricted to named researchers. |
Type Of Material | Database/Collection of data |
Year Produced | 2017 |
Provided To Others? | Yes |
Impact | This archive provides access to DCAL's research data, metadata, stimuli, etc for use and reuse by other researchers. It is expected to be widely used by researchers not only in the fields of deafness and sign language research but also in psychology, development, neuroscience, and linguistics more generally. |

Television programme showing some 1920s film footage of the first known record of BSL in the UK, telling of the economic downturn of that time, when many deaf people didn't have jobs. DCAL at the University College of London has discovered this unusual footage which was handed in to them. Upon viewing this footage, it revealed how BSL was used over ninety years ago - around 1927 or 1928 - just after the 'General Strike', when a lot of people were out of work. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p019x905 Greater knowledge among the Deaf community |

Results and Impact | This paper presents results from a corpus-based study investigating lexical variation in BSL. An earlier study investigating variation in BSL numeral signs found that younger signers were using a decreasing variety of regionally distinct variants, suggesting that levelling may be taking place. Here, we report findings from a larger investigation looking at regional lexical variants for colours, countries, numbers and UK placenames elicited as part of the BSL Corpus Project. Age, school location and language background were significant predictors of lexical variation, with younger signers using a more levelled variety. This change appears to be happening faster in particular sub-groups of the deaf community (e.g., signers from hearing families). Also, we find that for the names of some UK cities, signers from outside the region use a different sign than those who live in the region. Authours: Rose Stamp, Adam Schembri, Jordan Fenlon, Ramas Rentelis, Bencie Woll & Kearsy Cormier Deaf public and researchers became more aware of our research |

Results and Impact | http://www.uk.emb-japan.go.jp/en/event/2013/choshu/ucl.html link accessed 11.7.13 Event organised by the Embassy of Japan and the Deafness Cognition and Language Research Centre UCL. This event coincides with the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the Choshu Five in the UK. These five young men were members of the Choshu clan in western Japan who secretly left the country during the turbulent times toward the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate. The purpose of their trip was to study at UCL and to attempt to gain better knowledge of western nations. One of the five, Yozo Yamao, who later came to be known as 'The Father of Japanese Engineering', is also credited with creating Japan's first schools for blind children and for deaf children. His interest in this field stems from his time in the UK, in particular his time in Glasgow where he met deaf people and saw workers signing at Napier's Shipyard. n/a |

Results and Impact | Poster presentation at the Symposium on Research in Child Language Disorders, Madison, WI, 2012. Abstract: Two groups of deaf children responded with one association to a list of BSL signs, including nouns, verbs, and adjectives. One group consisted of strong or native signers while participants in the other group had a wider range of signing skills. Responses were measured based on their semantic relations. Deaf children across both groups showed a more limited spread of activated semantic networks and based their responses on individual experience rather than categorical relations, compared to TD hearing children. There was no shift in the type of association over time towards responses that were in the same grammatical class as the stimulus, as reported for hearing children. These results suggest that deaf children tend to use a more heterogeneous concept when organizing their vocabulary in BSL, which is similar to their performance in written language. The inadequate knowledge of categories may be due to individuals' limited opportunities to train their categorization skills knowledge when learning new words at home or in school. n/a |
