Quota Studentships

Lead Research Organisation: Royal Holloway University of London
Department Name: Physics

Abstract

Doctoral Training Partnerships: a range of postgraduate training is funded by the Research Councils. For information on current funding routes, see the common terminology at https://www.ukri.org/apply-for-funding/how-we-fund-studentships/. Training grants may be to one organisation or to a consortia of research organisations. This portal will show the lead organisation only.

Description CERN Masterclass
Form Of Engagement Activity A press release, press conference or response to a media enquiry/interview
Part Of Official Scheme? No
Primary Audience Schools
Results and Impact Each year about 6000 high school students in 24 countries come to one of about 110 nearby universities or research centres for one day. As a part of their day experience they connect via webcam to scientists at CERN, who go through the results of their experiments through the day, talk about physics at the LHC and their research, and enter discussion / take questions from the students/teachers about their research and physics in general. This Masterclass runs everyday for 1-2 weeks.

E-mails asking for internships, further questions, and asking advice about how to get into physics.

Description Interview for Student Magazine
Form Of Engagement Activity A press release, press conference or response to a media enquiry/interview
Part Of Official Scheme? No
Primary Audience Schools
Results and Impact A four page interview for a student magazine, on life in physics, at and about CERN and the LHC, including the ATLAS detector. My research, how I got in to physics, and how others could get into physics.

None that I am aware of.

Description Royal Holloway Taster Day for A-Level Students
Form Of Engagement Activity Participation in an open day or visit at my research institution
Part Of Official Scheme? No
Primary Audience Schools
Results and Impact Students came from various schools for the day, to hear indepth about the academic research being carried out in the department, hearing presentations, and doing experiments related to ATLAS and the LHC.

Interest from schools and students to come to their school to give talks.

Description STEM Outreach Day at Charters School
Form Of Engagement Activity Participation in an open day or visit at my research institution
Part Of Official Scheme? Yes
Primary Audience Schools
Results and Impact 2 Classes of ~20 students each, heard a talk about the LHC, and the ATLAS experiment. They then did an experiment with minature could chambers, to give an example of how you can detect the passage of charge particles.

Asked for repeat visits, asked to attend open days and masterclass days at RHUL.

Description School Awards Evening Lecture. Highfield School.
Form Of Engagement Activity A talk or presentation
Part Of Official Scheme? No
Primary Audience Public/other audiences
Results and Impact Around 300 parents and their children heard a lecture about physics at the LHC, and what it could mean for us in the future, during an awards evening. Prompting many questions and discussion during the social time in the evening, on physics, how the children could get into science, and from parents.

E-mails from Parents, asking about recommended universities for their children to go to study physics.

Description School Visit. Highfield School
Form Of Engagement Activity Participation in an open day or visit at my research institution
Part Of Official Scheme? No
Primary Audience Schools
Results and Impact Each Year, consisted of giving a talk 1 or 2 times, to two A-Level Classes each time (about 20 students per class), and maybe once a year the talk was given to a GCSE class. The talks were on Physics at the LHC and ATLAS, prompting questions about Physics and Careers in Science.

prompted interest in arranging a trip to CERN, return visits, and for student to give a talk at their awards evening in 2009, to a predominantly adult audience.

Description UK Masterclass
Form Of Engagement Activity Participation in an open day or visit at my research institution
Part Of Official Scheme? Yes
Primary Audience Schools
Results and Impact About 140 students per year take part in the RHUL masterclass. Many of the activities and demonstrations are given by PhD students.

Additional applications to do physics at university have arisen from this activity.

Description VIP Visit Guide: David Eastwood
Form Of Engagement Activity Participation in an open day or visit at my research institution
Part Of Official Scheme? No
Primary Audience Policymakers/politicians
Results and Impact David Eastwood, who is the University of Birmingham Vice-Chancellor, together with the Head of College of Engineering and Physical Sciences (Nigel Weatherill). Visited CERN with their entourage. Here they were given a tour of CERN, including the detector control rooms, and the LHC control room. We then had a "Round Table" discussion, where the guests talked to eminent physicists, eminent engineers, and students, about the LHC, and education in Physics and Engineering.

I got to ask questions to peers about how they were going to deal with the financial crisis looming at the time, and good lines of communication were opened, possibly opening a University exchange program between CERN and Birmingham, possibly to be extended to other Universities.

Description VIP Visit Guide: Mr Ian Taylor MBE MP
Form Of Engagement Activity Participation in an open day or visit at my research institution
Part Of Official Scheme? No
Primary Audience Policymakers/politicians
Results and Impact Mr Ian Taylor, who is the Chairman of the UK Parliamentary & Scientific Committee came to CERN with his entourage. Here he was given a tour of CERN, including the detector control rooms, and the LHC control room. While in the LHC control room we settled in the Glass Box conference room for discussion. Here discussion was held between parliamentarians, eminent physicists, and students.

Hopefully a better channel of communication between physics and politics.
