Quota Studentships

Lead Research Organisation: University of Portsmouth
Department Name: Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation

Abstract

Doctoral Training Partnerships: a range of postgraduate training is funded by the Research Councils. For information on current funding routes, see the common terminology at https://www.ukri.org/apply-for-funding/how-we-fund-studentships/. Training grants may be to one organisation or to a consortia of research organisations. This portal will show the lead organisation only.

Description This grant supported the research and training of 7 PhD students over a five year period (2008-2013). Their research included studies of supernovae, gravitational lensing, the very early universe and dark energy. A full list of 29 publications in scientific journals is given elsewhere.

All 7 students submitted their PhD and successfully passed their PhD viva exam. 4 went on to research positions in the UK and the USA, 2 went into scientific roles in industry and 1 went to work in public science policy. Further details are given under next destinations and skills.
Exploitation Route This research will inform studies across a range of astrophysics and cosmology, including supernovae, gravitational lensing, the very early universe and dark energy. It develops physical models, analytical techniques, and interpretation of data that is being taken up by other researchers in the field.

Results and Impact 450 people attended a Stargazing Live partner event at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, organised by the ICG. There were a variety of activities linked to our research and the opportunity for members of the public to ask our researchers questions which sparked discussion

Many members of the public who attended the event were not previously aware of the ICG or that cosmology research was being carried out in their home city.

Results and Impact The pupils were very active throughout the entire workshop. At the initial presentation they were answering questions and commenting. While making the systems they were asking good questions and coming to conclusions about the science in these systems using the information provided to them. At the final Q & A session they were asking questions on a large variety of topics, including some clarifications on how phsyics is abused in for science fiction concepts such as wormholes, black holes and even white holes.

The week after the workshop some members of the ICG were approached by the mother of one of the pupils. She told us that all her daughter had been able to talk about the previous week was the workshop and how much she wanted to be an astronomer. More formally the 18 pupils were asked if they had learnt something from the workshop, all 18 answered yes. All 18 also answered that they had enjoyed the workshop.
