Support for the UK ALMA Regional Centre Node
Lead Research Organisation:
University of Manchester
Department Name: Physics and Astronomy
Abstract
The Atacama Large Milimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) is the largest and most complex telescope ever built. It is designed to provide high sensitivity and high angular resolution observations of the cold gas dust in the Universe to study the origins and early evolution of galaxies, stars and planets. The work done under this application will support UK astronomers wishing to use ALMA, allowing them to extract the maximum possible science from this transformational telescope.
Planned Impact
The UK ALMA Regional Centre Node (ARC Node) undertakes a wide range of outreach activities to both professional and public audiences. These are coordinated with the wide range of such activities undertaken by the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics which hosts the ARC Node and the Jodrell Bank Observatory.

Description | Thos grant has provided continuing support for fstaff who support UK astronomers using ALMA. By providing support from proposal preparation to producing the final data products, including carrying out detailed quality control on the data, the ALMA Regional Centre (ARC) Node has directly contributed to the full range of projects undertaken on ALMA by UK-based astronomers. |
Exploitation Route | The continued support of the UK ARC Node provides UK astronomers with the support necessary to carry out world-leading research using ALMA. This research can be used to inspire school children in to study STEM subjects. |
