Support for WEAVE Operations

Lead Research Organisation: University of Oxford
Department Name: Oxford Physics

Abstract

WEAVE is a new multi-object spectroscopy facility for the William Herschel Telescope, which can place up to 1000 optical fibres on different sources within the field of view of the telescope to allow detailed spectroscopic study of all these targets simultaneously.
Commissioned in 2023/24, WEAVE is moving into its operational phase, but there is still a need for ongoing support from the Oxford team who have led the instrument development and built the fibre positioning system.
We propose to provide additional support effort for the PI for next three years to help with streamlining operations, working through details and understanding of issues that may arise during the early years of operation and data analysis, and with in situ works for an ongoing process of maintenance of the fibres themselves, to ensure complete handover of these activities to ING.
