Indirect Measurement of the Higgs Boson Width and Searches for Additional Higgs Bosons & Measurement of low pTD+ meson production cross section at CDF

Lead Research Organisation: University of Oxford
Department Name: Oxford Physics

Abstract

Using data collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC an indirect measurement of the Higgs boson width from off-shell production and decay to Z-boson pairs where one Z boson decays to a lepton pair and the other to a neutrino pair will be performed. The same final state will also be used to search for new high mass Higgs bosons predicted in many extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics, and for Higgs bosons decays to dark matter particles.

Using the full data set collected by the CDF experiment at the Tevatron collider in Run II a measurement of the D+ meson production cross-section in proton-antiproton collisions at 1.96 TeV center-of-mass energy will be performed. The measurement probes a yet unexplored low transverse-momentum range, down to 1.5 GeV/c, using events selected with criteria that bias minimally the features of the collision. For initial state and collision energy, this remains a unique measurement of quantities that are important for QCD studies and for tuning Monte Carlo simulations."

Description 2 seminars aimed at high school students
Geographic Reach National
Policy Influence Type Influenced training of practitioners or researchers
Impact These talks was part of the Italian program "Scuola-lavoro" (school-work). The final goal is to invite experts in different areas to explain specific topics not covered in the ordinary school program. I was asked to explain searches in high energy physics and fundamental interactions. One part of my talk was dedicated to explain how to be involved in activities in my field as high school students.

Description 2 seminars aimed at high school teachers
Geographic Reach National
Policy Influence Type Influenced training of practitioners or researchers
Impact These talks were intended to train high school professors on searches in modern physics. I tried to explain how to make the most complex physics concepts simple for students focusing on pictorial representations.

Geographic Reach Multiple continents/international
Policy Influence Type Membership of a guideline committee
Impact I'm part of the Organising Committee of a summer student program aimed at undergraduate students. I'm the summer school coordinator. I was involved in this program in 2017 and I will be involved in two new summer student programs in 2018, see the URL below for more details. The final goal of the program is to select the best candidates from all over the world giving them the opportunity to experience life as a researcher in my field for 2 months. Selected students will have more information to decide for a future PhD in particle physics.

Title Indirect strategy to constrain the Higgs boson width
Description A direct measurement of the Higgs boson width is not possible because of experimental limits. Theorists who are part of this analysis group came up with a brilliant idea. In a nutshell, you can constrain the Higgs boson total width by measuring the ratio of the off-shell production(i.e. not around the expected mass peak) to the on-shell production (i.e. around the expected mass peak).
Type Of Material Improvements to research infrastructure
Year Produced 2017
Provided To Others? No
Impact So far, this is the only possible way to constrain the Higgs boson total width worldwide. If one day, we will build a new e+e- machine, we will have a way to directly measure it. Thus, the impact of this technique is evident.

Title Samples for Higgs boson width
Description In order to constrain the Higgs width in data, my group needed some simulation samples in order to study detectors performances and to estimate all the background sources.
Type Of Material Database/Collection of data
Year Produced 2017
Provided To Others? No
Impact Without these samples, we would have never been able to constrain the Higgs boson width. This measurement is unique since we can measure it only at CERN.
