The role of vision in goal-oriented flight behaviours in birds

Lead Research Organisation: University of Oxford
Department Name: Interdisciplinary Bioscience DTP

Abstract

My Dphil will explore sensory-motor control of bird flight through a sensory ecology approach, with the overall aim of reaching a systems-level understanding of bird flight control. I will be focusing on the role of vision in the goal-oriented flight behaviours of obstacle avoidance, gap negotiation and perching, while also addressing how other sensory modalities may influence these behaviours. I hope that using zebra finches as a model species will also allow me to draw links to the neurobiological and cognitive basis of such behaviours.
