Dancing to the Beat of Gender (In)Equality?: An Investigation into Women's Participation in the Electronic Dance Music Scene in Belfast and Dublin

Lead Research Organisation: Queen's University Belfast
Department Name: Sch of Hist, Anthrop, Philos & Politics

Abstract

This pioneering study will investigate, compare and contrast women's experiences in the electronic dance music scenes in Belfast and Dublin. This research will address the impact of historical, social and material encounters with technology, design and commercialisation on women's roles as DJs, producers, club-goers, sound and lighting engineers, booking agents, promoters, venue owners, and visual artists in both cities. By analysing issues of identity, gender (in)equality and processes of inclusion and exclusion, this project will bring new insights into how women's engagements with music technologies have changed over time.
