Rock Music and Gender: How music journalists perpetuate or challenge stereotypes about women in the British rock music industry

Lead Research Organisation: Newcastle University
Department Name: Sch of Arts and Cultures

Abstract

Stereotypes have made it difficult for women to gain access to and be taken seriously in the rock music industry. The purpose of this research is to explore how British music journalists perpetuate or challenge stereotypes about women rock musicians. I will conduct semi-structured interviews
to investigate how women rock musicians perceive current media representations of themselves and other rock musicians. Further, I will interview women music journalists to gain insight into their perspectives and experience as media producers. A critical discourse analysis will be conducted to examine how journalists from different types of music publication depict women rock musicians.
