Abstract

In this PhD I wish to look at alter egos used in popular music performance through the lens of
non-binary gender scholarship. While non-binary and genderqueer issues have been explored
in disciplines such as psychology [Joel 2013], gender studies [Shapiro 2007, Gilbert 2009, Nicolas
2019], and law [Meerkamper 2013], there has been little to no musicology that analyses musical
performance with a focus on and understanding of gender spectrum and variance. Through
analysis of critical theory and recorded texts, I will analyse the performance alter egos of
popular music artists to advance understanding of the performance of gender as well as
developing frameworks toward a more genderfluid and non-binary musicology.
