This paper uses one of the monuments in the MAMA corpus as evidence for the social history of inner Anatolia in the late fourth century AD, focussing on the ways in which local Christians understood their pagan past. The inscription is used to shed light on an important fourth-century saint's life, the Life of St Abercius, a semi-fictional account of a second-century bishop of Hierapolis in Phrygia.
