Resistant pathogens can cause infections in humans that are difficult or impossible to treat. • Scientific evidence shows that antimicrobials and antimicrobial-resistant microbes are present and can persist and travel (spread) through the environment (waterways and soils). Human activity can contaminate the environment with antimicrobials and antimicrobial-resistant microbes, which can accelerate the development and spread of resistance. • Contamination can occur from human and animal waste, pharmaceutical manufacturing waste, and use of antimicrobial pesticides for crops; however, the scale and risk associated with this contamination is not fully understood. There are outstanding scientific questions related to the presence and impact of antimicrobial-resistant microbes in the environment and the direct risk posed to human health. • The environment is a key element of the One Health framework. Our research, which was published in BMJ Quality and Safety in 2016, was the first peer-reviewed assessment of the 'Intelligent Monitoring' system which was used by the CQC to monitor health and social care providers and to identify those that should be prioritised for inspection and improvement. Our groundbreaking analysis showed that the Intelligent Monitoring system was unable to detect which hospital trusts were delivering poor quality care, with its predictions of hospital quality being wrong more often than they were right. That research was also reported in a dedicated article in the weekly Health Service Journal (14.3.2017), which is widely read among managers in the NHS. He is also collaborating with Scottish Government and the two Codes to develop verifiable options for community benefit, to comply with forthcoming requirements in the Natural Capital Investment Framework. Dr Weetch has: - established minimum and ideal standards for all museum records - introduced guidelines on how to use each field within the database (these guidelines are already being implemented for areas of the collection outside the scope of project) - created new fields within the MuseumPlus database (i.e. Iconography) - introduced the use of the 'Associated Person' field within the MuseumPlus database, to document non-makers/creators (e.g. people named on coins and seals) - standardised how secondary literature is recorded in MuseumPlus and how its presence/absence in the museum's library is recorded The project has also enabled the purchase and use of improved equipment for photography and measurement of all of the museum's collections. Throughout 2016 Dr Weetch and Dickon Whitewood (the project's Inventory Officer) ran a series of training activities to improve the skills of museum volunteers who have responsibility for photographing and measuring the museum's collections; for example, on 8 April 2016 Mr Whitewood led a workshop on collections photography with some of the museum's volunteers, who since went on to assist with aspects of the project's collections work during summer 2016. Collectively, the team came runner-up for the 'going the extra mile' category at the London Museums Volunteers Awards (6 September 2016). Throughout 2016 project researchers also worked with the museum's Learning and Access Officer, Hannah Agass, to improve learning resources for families and for school and university groups who come to the museum to learn about the crusades. Following the UPGRO research we have been successful in making the case for further research into cheaper alternatives. This research is being carried out in partnership with the government of Uganda as well as the local private sector. The expected outcome is an affordable, strong alternative pipe configuration that can be installed at depth thus removing the economic incentive to continue use of GI pipes which corrode, lead to handpump failure and impaire water quality. The intention is to then influence government quality standards and private sector supply chains for wider uptake of this solution, bringing about better water quality and pump performance for rural people.Contribution to a national consultation/reviewImprovements to wel;-being: since GI pipes were banned practitioners are now required to use stainless steel or PVC pipes in handpump installations with benefits for water quality and pump performance. Changes in efficiency of public service delivery: use of stainless steel pipes in retrofitted handpump installations has led to improved performance of handpumps with less frequent breakdowns - however, it has been noted that the correct grade of stainless steel must be installed and the regulatory standards agency needs to strengthen surviellance to ensure the correct grade of material is imported into the country. In Parson Cross work with residents led to recommendations of IT system development by the council and estabishement of Job clubs to support residents engagement with new DWP job seeking "digital by default" systems. The research developed a model for intervention that had three key elements: 1] assessment of intereventions against client context; 2] hyperlocal delivery and codesign; 3] individual engagement and assment to lnk clients with appropriate support. This model has been implemented in the work of Sheffield Homes who have developed a number of Hyperlocal interventions and are rolling these out across relevant community centres. This model has also been taken on board by South Yorkshire Homes (Housing Association) and Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council - and has been proposed for local NHS community support (evidence base, reports, correspondence, interviews with John Lovibond and Jane Lyon SCC). She sent written feedback regarding the document and forwarded relevant references related to comparable settings in other post-colonial countires and to the International Standard for Community Interpreting. This was followed by an all-day meeting with the DLI staff to discuss the feedback on the Protocolo previously provided. Rosaleen Howard also participated in the morning's discussion. Recent ecolabel benchmarking exercises have shown a mixed use of the FAO Guidelines, but usage is expected to increase as interest in the governance implications of ecolabels grows. Through a focus on two certifiers/ecolabels for marine fisheries (Marine Stewardship Council and Global Trust's "FAO Based Responsible Fisheries Management Certification") this report examines two issues facing ecolabelling community. A further consideration of one of the often-touted benefits of ecolabels - price premiums - has been conducted. A literature review revealed that no data on economic returns to fishers have been published thus far. The recent research done on price premiums at the retail level represent the first step required for tracing price premiums back to fishers. The FAO guidelines for ecolabelling offer resolutions for both issues explored under the context of MSC and Global Trust while the demonstrated potential for price premiums helps further support the potential benefits of ecolabels for fishers. Further refinements to the FAO Guidelines are suggested that would reduce the number of guidelines while increased outreach and dissemination of the Guidelines paired with a robust evaluation framework may improve understanding and therefore uptake.Europehttp://www.fao.org/3/a-bc431e.pdfDutch Government Rountable on Certification in CommoditiesParticipation in a guidance/advisory committeeThis policy review 'Chains for Change' was established by the Dutch Government to review eco-labelling and certification across a number of commodity groups. Currently, the focus, for example of IDH, is on 18 commodities. Starting point are the targets, such as poverty reduction or environmental protection. Deforestation has been, and still is, a major theme, crosscutting different commodities. Some sectors have more impacts than others, some sectors can deliver more gains. It is expected that biggest gains are to be found in cocoa, tea, pulp & paper, palm oil and soy, and not in natural stone for example. Focus can enhance credibility, because chain actors ranging from producers to consumers, need proof that a sector can be transformed. Focus is also needed to be able to move towards and reach tipping points. It could be a task of governments to bring focus. However, given the strong diversity of chains and commodities, it was debated whether focus is the right means to reach overall sustainability. The diversity of perspectives was mentioned as an important prerequisite in sustainable GVC governance, because focus could lead to tunnel vision. There was however no support to, for example, double the amount of commodities to be addressed by standards, though neither was there for the common notion that there is now overcertification. Especially if spillover effects are real, overcertification is not a problem. It was noted that there is no overcertification, but there is overassessment. The issue of premium eroding was addressed, especially if the aim is to let producers gain from standards. What would be the incentive for small-scale producers to invest and participate, if there is no premium? The business case is essential for producers. It was argued that there can be other effects more important than direct economic impact, like through capacity building and improved farming. Also, "old-fashioned aid" is still a way to improve farming without certification. It was suggested that focus is not the right word, but that it is about prioritization. 2. What instruments are sufficient, is there a need for more instruments, and/or should there be a mix of instruments? Certification can be the trigger for innovation and improvement. It should be realized though that certification is not just one-size-fits-all, there is a plurality of models, structures and forms. How to make sure that sustainability standards become sustainable themselves is a challenge; it was noted that we are still in the startup phase. Public money is especially needed in the initial phase but since sustainability is about continual improvement, developing an exit strategy (after 2-4 years) for government support is of utmost importance. Private partners should take it further, and make the B2B relations work. Certification can facilitate such B2B collaboration, by bringing people together, forging relationships and building platforms for information exchange and local support. 3. What is the relation between standards or structures on the national level, and those on the international level, is there a need for benchmarking? Overall, there was consensus that there is a need for benchmarking of national standards, although it was noted that retailers work globally, so they do not support the idea of national standards. Benchmarking can range from harmonization to equivalency, a question is what does benchmarking need to do? According to some, it should be a spectrum and employ a stepwise approach towards sustainability (continual improvement). The thermal-drone enables safe, routine, efficient and cost-effective monitoring and management of animal populations over large and inhospitable areas, with a factor of up to 200x increase in survey efficiency over existing methods. This provides conservation agencies greatly improved data needed to quantify and mitigate biodiversity loss. The thermal drone system is being used routinely to help local fire-fighting teams to find/extinguish annual peat fires in Indonesia which are a major contributor to anthropogenic CO2 emissions.
