It comprises a survey instrument describing health states across five domains, and a system of utility values for each state. The original 3-level version of EQ-5D (3L) was going to be replaced with a 5-level version (5L) but the consequences of this change were uncertain. We found that the 5L shifts mean utility scores up the utility scale toward full health and compresses them into a smaller range, compared with the 3L. Improvements in quality of life are valued less using the 5L than using the 3L. The 3L and the 5L can produce substantially different estimates of cost effectiveness and therefore have an impact on funding decisions. Using this methodology the UK IPO developed a database to understand the barriers to formal intellectual property usage. The PI designed the new survey and worked with the ONS to implement it. After the UK CIS2015 was released, the PI signed a MoU with the UK IPO to analyse the data on the barriers to patent and trademark use. The analysis revealed that four assumptions that often underlie thinking about patent policy were incorrect. First, we didn't find any evidence when looking at a single innovation that small firms were less likely to use patents than large firms. Second, we find that disclosure of information, modelled by many theoretical papers as the most common barrier to patenting, was in fact a barrier to patent use for very few innovating firms but patentability was an important issue. More research needs to be done to understand what patentability really means. Third, we found that while open firms do patent and trademark less than other types of firms, openness was a larger barrier to the use of trademarks than patents, suggesting that market sharing is more problematic when compared to technology sharing. Funding of £4280 was obtained from the Foundation for the Sociology of Health and Illness and the initiative was also supported by the BSA and the British Library. The seminar series was held at the prestigious conference facilities of the British Library in London and involved the Head of Social Sciences at the Library. The aim of this seminar series was to bridge the gap between academic sociologists of mental health and service user/survivor mental health researchers, providing opportunities for learning from one another. In this respect, it was ground breaking and it was an extremely successful initative. Each seminar featured academic and survivor presenters and NSUN went on to organise its own seminar series along similar lines, in Birmingham, the following year. The series also led to the publication of a book, edited by a survivor researcher, Dr Patsy Staddon, Mental Health Service Users in Research, Critical Sociological Perspectives (Policy Press). Recent evidence has suggested that antibiotic resistance can be selected by exposure to biocides, which are commonly used as disinfectants and preservatives. Research at the University of Birmingham has shown the common mechanistic links between antibiotic and triclosan (a commonly used biocide) resistance. This research was used by the European Commission as evidence to support two reports published in 2009 and 2010 to inform opinions as to the safety of biocide use. These reports recommended specific new research avenues be funded and that possible selection of antibiotic resistance by biocides is a valid concern and were used as part of the evidence base in preparation of a new law which has come in to force across the European Union. Biocide use and sales in Europe have been controlled by the Biocidal Products Directive since 1998. This legislation has been superseded by the EU Biocides Regulation (published May 2012, legally binding from September 2013). This new legislation now includes a requirement for new biocides to be demonstrated not to select resistance to themselves or antibiotics in target organisms before achieving registration; this addition was informed by University of Birmingham research. This will prevent biocides entering the environment that exert a selective pressure and favour the emergence of mutant bacteria with increased biocide and antibiotic resistance. Thus the research described has had an impact on policy debate and the introduction of new legislation. The research described above by Dr Mark Webber at the University of Birmingham provided a scientific and mechanistic insight into how biocide exposure can select antibiotic resistance, proved that common mechanisms of resistance are relevant to both biocides and antibiotics and that mutants selected after biocide exposure are fit in animal models. The research also identified significant gaps in the current knowledge base regarding the mechanisms by which bacteria respond to biocides and commonalities with response to antibiotics, as well as a dearth of data on biocide tolerance in clinical and environmental isolates of pathogenic species. The impact from these findings was the provision of significant new information for policy makers and opinion leaders to formulate opinions as to the safe use of biocides and recommendations for future research priorities at a European level (1). This report gave a series of recommendations including instigation of research programmes to develop surveillance programmes to identify levels of biocide tolerance, develop standards for testing of the propensity of biocides to select for resistance and to monitor biocide production and environmental accumulation levels. The research was directly and exclusively quoted in 2010 in the EC Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety 'Preliminary opinion on triclosan': 'the identification of mechanisms of microbial resistance including genomic and proteomic aspects, is commendable and should be extended to other biocides' (2). The research has not only helped to shape EU opinion but also influenced changes to the law governing the use of biocides. The new 'EU biocides regulation (No 528/2012)' (3) was released in 2012 and became legally binding across the EU from 2013. This includes requirements for any new biocidal product to demonstrate that it does not to select resistance to itself or target organisms before it can be registered and used in any formulations. This legislation supersedes the previous 'Biocidal products directive'. In the UK alone 652 biocidal products are currently licensed under the previous directive, as detailed on the Health and Safety Executive website of licensed biocides (4). The new regulations influenced by this work will apply to at least this number of products in a growing market. All biocidal products now submitted for regulatory approval required to be allowed to be sold in the European Union must now have been demonstrated not to select resistance to themselves or other antimicrobials, this will prevent biocides being used that provide a selective pressure that can drive antibiotic resistance. Whilst the new legislation has only been legally binding since September 2013 the German federal bureau for risk management (BfR) recommended a ban on triclosan in 2009 (5) in all non-medical contexts, the BfR ruling relied heavily on thea report mentioned above from the EC Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety 'Preliminary opinion on triclosan' to form a basis for its decision which in turn used research from Birmingham to shape its conclusions. The EU in turn imposed a similar ban across Europe in 2010 in response to the BfR recommendation and a petition from Ciba (the manufacturer of triclosan) to remove triclosan from the approved list of biocidal products (this ban was over-ruled in 2012 after appeal from users of triclosan due to procedural problems with the original ruling, further legal consideration is pending at the time of submission). Focusing on areas of low productivity in the UK (aligned to the Industrial Strategy) Age UK Leeds, Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council, Pennine Foods (Sheffield) and NAViGO (Grimsby) agreed to be case studies. I provided these organisations with my time, expertise and knowledge to help them implement a plan to support their employees who had informal caring responsibilities ((of a disabled, seriously-ill, or older loved one). All the industrial placement organisations allowed me to spend time with all their team leaders/managers to learn about the organisation, the people who work there, what support for their working carers is needed, how that support can be implemented, etc. Support identified included writing a carers policy, introducing a carers passport, reviewing carers/special leave policies, providing information and awareness raising, organising line manager training, etc. It has been left to each organisation to decide what is best for them and their employees. The Chinese decision to protect its crops from this invasive species affected trade with Canada and Australia, and thus to intergovernmental discussions. Whilst mathematical models have long played a role in hard sciences, driving uptake of computational techniques, this has spread significantly over the last two decades to include the life sciences. This shift in the sciences reflects a wider change in society as computers and computational thinking become more embedded in all areas of life. Whilst there have been substantive shifts in recent years through efforts such as "Computing at schools" to encourage computer science in early years education, this has been predominantly limited to that discipline. Despite its value being recognised, and the requirement of examination boards for modelling approaches, "computational science" has been slower to be adopted due to lack of appropriate software and developed activites. Over the past QQ we have developed a body of work aimed at A-level students to introduce cancer modelling, based on research at MRC CU. At the heart of this work is the use of the open source BioModelAnalyzer tool (http://biomodelanalyzer.org/), a graphical tool for network model construction and analysis. We have presented demonstrations at the Big Biology day, the Cambridge Science Festival, and the MRC Festival of Science. Through connections made with individual teachers during the MRC Festival, we were approached by Richard Tateson (and later Andri Achilleos) of OCR and worked with OCR to develop A-level worksheets. Forty-five service providers and professionals from a variety of sectors (including from the Department for Work and Pensions, HR, Citizens Advice, and the medical sector) attended the workshop, which was co-delivered by academic researchers and autistic people. The aim was to co-design practical methods for facilitating communication for each service. Research into adapting communication was discussed, allowing evidence-based adaptations to be co-produced (with discussion between the services promoting creative ideas across sectors). Workshop attendees were encouraged to pledge to become Ambassadors for Change by making adaptations to their services for autistic people that they had co-produced at the workshop.
