FERtigation Irrigation DEcisive Farming (FERIDE)

Abstract

The FERIDE project addresses one of the most pressing challenges in modern agriculture: increasing food production sustainably while using water, fertilisers, and energy more efficiently. Climate change, water scarcity, and rising input costs are putting farmers under significant pressure, and current irrigation and nutrient management practices often lead to crop losses, inefficient resource use, and environmental degradation.

FERIDE proposes an innovative precision agriculture system that integrates real-time environmental monitoring, soil and crop data, and smart decision-making tools to optimise irrigation and fertigation. By applying water and nutrients at the right time, in the right amount, and in the right place, FERIDE will help farmers increase crop yields, reduce input costs, and lower energy consumption. This system is designed to be scalable across different crops, farm sizes, and geographies.

A key innovation of FERIDE is its dual focus on precision irrigation and precision fertigation. Precision irrigation ensures efficient water use by adapting to soil moisture, crop growth stage, and weather conditions. Precision fertigation enables targeted nutrient delivery based on crop uptake and soil properties, optimising growth while minimising environmental impact. Together, these innovations create a controlled farming environment that supports sustainable, high-efficiency agriculture.

FERIDE will also develop a digital platform connecting farmers, agronomists, fertiliser suppliers, irrigation providers, and logistics operators. This platform enables real-time data sharing, predictive analytics, and collaborative decision-making, supporting more informed resource management and reducing financial risk for farmers. By fostering coordination across the agricultural value chain, FERIDE helps build resilience and sustainability at scale.

The project brings together leading European partners, combining expertise in agricultural technology, digital systems, AI, and agronomy. This collaborative approach ensures that the solution is practical, evidence-based, and ready for real-world adoption.

Ultimately, FERIDE aims to transform farming practices in Europe and beyond by providing farmers with tools to optimise resource use, increase productivity, protect the environment, and improve economic outcomes. By supporting sustainable agriculture, FERIDE contributes to global food security, environmental protection, and the development of next-generation farming technologies.
