The Trident AquaSail System: testing the market for an environmentally sensitive lowhead hydropower system.

Abstract

Trident Renewable Energy Systems Ltd is a new company formed to explore the commercial
potential of the AquaSail System - a new hydropower solution they designed when responding
to a property developer's request for proposals at a site with high levels of environmental
sensitivity.
The AquaSail System incorporates vertical-axis turbines and a novel Control System as part of
a low-head barrier. The turbines are placed at the sluice gates and/or tidal flaps of the barrier,
with only the blades projecting into the water. The blade design engages a larger percentage
of the total flow volume than conventional turbines do, thereby improving efficiency. The
turbine also creates a natural passage that is safe for migratory fish. The control system is
designed to produce a steady output of electricity from turbines rotating at variable speeds.
The relatively slow turbine speed also reduces turbulence and scouring in river locations.
This project will seek to identify the level of commercial potential for the AquaSail System.
Low-head hydropower has been identified for some years as a promising additional source of
renewable energy but environmental, capital cost and efficiency issues have prevented
substantial growth in this area. The project team will identify key decision makers in this
sector: landowners and consultants/specifiers as well as suppliers and approach them for their
reaction to the AquaSail system. Lead organisations in the British hydropower sector will
also be approached.
The information gained from both desk research and direct engagement with key decision
makers and influencers will be used to develop a Commercialisation Plan for the AquaSail
System.
