An Incommodious Guest: The Tudeh Party in East Germany, 1953-1979

Lead Research Organisation: University of St Andrews
Department Name: History

Abstract

The project seeks to explore the intellectual development of the 1941-founded Iranian Marxist party Tudeh during its exile in the GDR between 1953 and 1979. Being centred on an analysis of the two central organs of the party, it poses the question of how Marxist thought was applied to social, political and economic developments in Iran and further developed, given that its authors were undergoing decades-long periods of detachment from the country. This cannot be answered without clarifying the editorial processes governing the production and distribution of these publications as well as the circumstances of the party's exile, including the biographies of its leading members.
