CLEAR-FARM – Carbon and Livestock Emissions Abatement via Recovery and Manure management

Lead Participant: CCM TECHNOLOGIES LIMITED

Abstract

This project develops a two-step treatment that converts livestock manure into a safe, nutrient-rich feedstock for carbon-capturing fertiliser production. It offers a low-emission alternative to traditional manure storage and spreading, which produce around 6.6 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent each year in England.

The first step, microaerobic fermentation, breaks down organic waste in low-oxygen conditions, cutting nitrogen losses and reducing harmful gas emissions. In the second step, the material is thermally treated to kill pathogens, using recovered heat for efficient drying. The end product, CCm Growth, is a pelletised fertiliser with a verified negative carbon footprint, already in use by major UK food brands such as PepsiCo and Nestlé.

Field trials will demonstrate fertiliser performance using poultry litter, now classified as industrial waste in England, where over 155 million tonnes are generated annually. This project will give farmers practical alternatives to avoid costly disposal and prevent valuable nutrients from ending up in landfill or incineration.

Lab studies will compare additional feedstocks to ensure consistent fertiliser quality and low emissions. A full life cycle assessment will quantify GHG reductions and other environmental gains. Farmer-friendly tools, including a nutrient map on the CLEAR-FARM digital hub, will support improved sustainability across UK agriculture.
