Farmer-Led Trials of Supramolecular Fertilisers to Improve Protein, Yield and Low-Carbon Performance in Milling Wheat

Lead Participant: ASHBURY FARMS

Abstract

This project supports UK wheat farmers to test and adopt new fertiliser and digital technologies that aim to improve productivity, lower environmental impact and strengthen long-term resilience.

The team will trial two supramolecular products on commercial milling wheat farms in England. The first is a nitrogen foliar spray designed to improve uptake and reduce losses. The second is a liquid formulation applied during grain filling to enhance nutrient use efficiency and crop performance. Both are based on supramolecular chemistry, developed to deliver targeted nutrient availability and reduce dependence on conventional fertilisers.

Milling wheat is one of the UK's most economically important arable crops, with significant domestic and export value. The sector faces pressure to maintain quality while reducing emissions, meeting buyer expectations and adapting to fertiliser cost volatility.

Trials will run across two growing seasons on two large-scale farms, with applications aligned to key growth stages.Yields, grain quality and fertiliser efficiency will be measured alongside greenhouse gas indicators and ROI.The project will also use a digital platform to record inputs, support nutrient planning and track environmental metrics.

A team of farmers, advisers, researchers and agri-tech SMEs will lead delivery.Independent analysis will ensure results are robust and suitable for wider use.

A strong dissemination programme will share findings via factsheets, open events, webinars and online updates.
