FrontM HOTG Integration to bring Edge AI for Collision Avoidance in Maritime
Lead Participant:
FRONTM LIMITED
Abstract
We are on a mission to protect the global marine ecosystem and save lives from accidental collisions between vessels at sea. Our vision is of a safer, fairer, and more sustainable industry.
To achieve this we need to tackle the problems of lack of visibility, insights and navigational equipment that advises of nearby large vessels for small-sized vessels operating at sea.
In Europe in 2016 there were [3145 marine accidents (incidents of damage or death][0]), causing £7.5bn of ship damage and 1142 injuries and fatalities. Between 2011-16 there were 16,539, with 6207 injuries/fatalities. 95% involved a collision with another vessel or the ground. Of these 50% were caused by navigational issues and the rest by extreme weather, human error, and mechanical failure. They triggered 869 investigations and 695 reports (estimated cost £4m).
FrontM is an AI platform company focussed on overcoming digital poverty in remote and isolated environments, such as the Blue Economy. The [World Bank][1] defines the blue economy as the _"sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods and jobs, while preserving the health of ocean ecosystem."_
We are partnering with HOTG is building the distributed infrastructure to pave the way for AI-enabled edge applications. HOTG is a new-age Silicon Valley deep-tech startup founded by leading innovators and backed by industry-leading venture capitalists.
Our Collision Avoidance solution will use FrontM's AI-powered and HOTG's Edge Computing enabled product to transform how maritime operators plan their routes and remain safe in their operations at sea
