Abstract
Industrial Cadets, working alongside our leading PEMD sector employer partners, can inspire future generations to achieve their STEM potential in the growing PEMD sector.
We use a multi activity approach, with next steps and challenge opportunities available for interested students, working alongside PEMD industry role models. We know this multi-opportunity and role model focussed approach is particularly important for young people from disadvantaged and underrepresented groups.
**_"I would love for all employers, from all sectors, to provide these life-changing opportunities to young people - you have no idea how far these encounters go in empowering young people, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds."-?Teacher, Woodside High School, Tottenham, on students completing an Industrial Cadets project._**
PEMD presents both opportunity and challenge for engaging schools and young people. There is great opportunity in the sector for young people, but in a crowded education/careers space there is much competition for getting messages heard by schools/young people.
The PEMD message will be heard in schools through a pathway of activity that educates thousands of young people about the potential of PEMD industries for the futures, inspires many to explore next steps and equips them with the knowledge skills and confidence to secure the best futures in the sector. Over 1,000 young people will benefit through a mix of national PEMD outreach and targeted support in the Midlands.
Industrial Cadets [https://www.etrust.org.uk/industrial-cadets][0] is excellently placed to provide a schools engagement programme. The Industrial Cadets PEMD Pathway will consist of 2 school engagement strands.
Midlands PEMD Hub:
- STEM Workshops for large groups at Industrial Cadets Challenger level. Introducing core themes through hands on STEM challenges
- Bronze level PEMD industry mentored projects, workshops at universities, apprenticeship training venues and leading PEMD companies
National Virtual PEMD Outreach:
- Courses/work experiences exploring pathways in STEM for students deciding between apprenticeships and university study (Bronze/Silver level). PEMD specialist modules added to 2 national virtual courses, with PEMD challenges and Meet the Mentor panels where early career PEMD engineers share their experiences with young people.
