V2X-Flex: Unlocking the energy flexibility potential of domestic bi-directional EV charging technology
Lead Participant:
EV DOT ENERGY LTD
Abstract
V2X Flex is a collaborative project aiming to unlock and expand the flexibility potential of electric vehicles (EVs) using interoperable, bi-directional charging solutions. Partnering with the Energy Systems Catapult (ESC) and collaborating with Wallbox, Indra, Siemens, VW and Nissian, ev.energy will develop prototype software and a new business model which will reduce entry barriers for domestic use of V2X bi-directional charges to provide energy flexibility services.
Through the Innovate UK funded Max Grid project, ev.energy's smart charging software, mobile app and Virtual Power Plant (VPP) platform has scaled from ~1,000 to \>60,000 users worldwide in the last 24 months. We have also taken V1G from innovation to full commercialisation with the UK's first commercially traded VPP using only EVs to deliver grid service to UK Power Networks. Our central position in the charging ecosystem and ability to deploy our software at scale through our partnership enables us to aggregate sufficient asset volumes in each market to deliver domestic energy flexibility services at scale.
This innovation will take a disruptive approach, developing new software to increase the interoperability of next generation CCS bi-directional chargers and design new commercial charging-as-a-service propositions for V2H, V2B and V2G use cases. Taking a broader approach to previous projects, ev.energy's platform of 60,000+ EV drivers and ESC's Living Lab and Consumer Insights Team will be leveraged to co-develop/test new propositions with existing and future EV drivers that emphasise increased convenience, resilience, self-reliance and carbon savings on top of direct financial benefits.
Dissemination activities including the publication of an action-oriented industry whitepaper on the barriers to deployment and uptake of V2X technology have a dedicated work-package to ensure the impacts of the projects are maximised.
