Fully-Automated, Intelligently Controlled Feedstock Management for Additive Manufacturing with FFF Technology

Abstract

Our consortium, lead by Autonomous Manufacturing (AMFG) and Batch.Works , is delivering a groundbreaking project titled 'Fully-Automated, Intelligently Controlled Feedstock Management for Additive Manufacturing with FFF Technology'. Our goal is to develop a system that enables the seamless integration of automated feedstock management with 3D printing workflows, increasing productivity and efficiency while reducing material waste.

Batch.Works will design a robotic system that uses a gantry to automatically transfer filament feedstock between storage unit and each 3D printer in a bank. This will allow for easy swapping of filament between each printer, as well as replacing consumed filament spools with new ones. The system will be able to sense which spool is where and how much material is left, allowing plan and respond to demand accordingly without human intervention.

AMFG will control the entire system from a software perspective, integrating with sources of demand such as an ERP or online storefront. AMFG will take these orders and automatically create print jobs to produce the associated parts. These print jobs will then be scheduled onto the printers in the rack, minimising material wastage on the spools and reducing the number of worker interactions needed.

The aim of our project is to create a fully-automated and intelligent system that can efficiently manage the feedstock and 3D printing workflows, optimizing the entire process and reducing waste. The system will be able to produce parts with different colours, materials, and filament amounts without human intervention, freeing up workers to focus on other tasks.

Our project has significant implications for the 3D printing industry, particularly in the areas of productivity and sustainability. By reducing material waste, our system will reduce the environmental impact of 3D printing, making it a more sustainable manufacturing method. Additionally, the increased productivity and efficiency of the system will make 3D printing a more viable option for large-scale production, opening up new opportunities for businesses in this industry by providing the benefits of additive with the upsides of mass-production technologies such as injection moulding.

We believe that our project has the potential to revolutionize the additive manufacturing industry and manufacturing more generally, are excited to bring it to fruition. By combining the expertise of AMFG and Batch.Works, we are confident that we can create a system that will change the way 3D printing is used and perceived, making it more efficient, sustainable, applicable and accessible.
