Abstract
Introducing 'Mind the Skills Gap: Lead. Innovate. Excel.' This initiative, led by the young entrepreneur Rafmary M.R. Baker, is poised to reshape education and uplift under-served youth, carving a path towards a more inclusive and promising future for all.
Rafmary's unwavering commitment to enhancing educational accessibility shines through her venture, Cambridge Business Online Centre, which strives to bolster educational and employment prospects for youth globally through the power of technology. Within this context, 'Mind the Skills Gap: Lead. Innovate. Excel.' stands as a testament to her belief in the untapped potential within each young mind, yearning to be nurtured and unleashed.
Rooted in Peterborough, where one in three children faces the harsh realities of poverty, this project underscores the urgency of its mission, particularly in bridging the gap between the 'town and gown' divide in East Anglia. Through this initiative, 30 local participants will benefit from a 10-week future skills bootcamp specifically designed for 16 to 24-year-olds who are at risk of self-exclusion from education, employment, or training.
As we find ourselves in the interim between 2015, when the Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs) were established, and the target year of 2030, the original deadline for their achievement, recent challenges arising from the pandemic threaten our progress, especially concerning SDG target 8.6, which aims to reduce the proportion of young people not in education, employment, or training(NEET). It is clear that the timing of this initiative could not be more opportune: The youth have shouldered an unequal burden because of the COVID19 economic repercussions. The crisis led to the emergence of novel job opportunities, distinct from those that were lost, creating a gap between the skills needed for these new roles and those currently available in the job market.
What distinguishes this project, therefore, is its all-encompassing approach, addressing every facet of the skills matrix. This includes cognitive and metacognitive skills such as critical thinking, learning to learn, and self-regulation. Participants also nurture social and emotional skills, including empathy, self-efficacy, and collaboration, while gaining practical and physical skills, like navigating emerging technologies such as AI.
By endowing young minds with the competencies to successfully integrate into a post-pandemic world, 'Mind the Skills Gap :Lead. Innovate. Excel.' strives to empower them to emerge as confident leaders who possess a global vision, an entrepreneurial spirit, and a profound sense of social responsibility, committed to shaping a better future for people, place, and our planet.
