Lead Participant: CIPHERX TECHNOLOGIES LTD

Abstract

The **FREEDOM-Patch** (**F**emale **RE**productive **E**mpowerment and **DO**se **M**anagement Patch) project is a collaborative effort between CipherX Technologies and the Stevens Group at the University of Oxford. This 18-month feasibility project aims to develop a next-generation female contraceptive device utilising advanced microneedle-array patch technology. The core innovation of this project lies in the development of advanced materials to deliver Levonorgestrel directly through the skin via painless dissolvable microneedles in minutes.

This innovative product addresses significant shortcomings in existing contraceptives by offering a non-invasive, self-administered solution that enhances compliance and autonomy. This is particularly beneficial in low- and middle-income countries, where access to healthcare can be limited, and traditional contraceptives often fail due to the necessity for regular healthcare visits. The FREEDOM-Patch provides a long-acting solution that moves family planning from the clinical setting to the privacy of one's home.

One of the standout features of the FREEDOM-Patch is its ability to deliver a controlled dosage over extended periods (weeks-months), enhancing effectiveness while minimising side effects. It also includes visual indicators for dose verification, empowering users with confidence in their contraceptive management. After its lifecycle, the patch allows natural fertility restoration without the need for a healthcare visit.

Market analysis shows a strong demand for innovative contraceptive solutions, with expectations for significant growth in the global contraceptive market. The project's strategy includes partnerships with global health organisations and pharmaceutical companies to ensure extensive distribution and accessibility. Aligning with global health objectives also enhances the potential for broad adoption and substantial social impact.

By advancing this technology, the FREEDOM-Patch positions the UK as a leader in contraceptive innovation, contributing to both public health and economic growth. Supported by existing intellectual property, the project's outputs include comprehensive feasibility reports assessing performance and scalability, preparing for broader commercialization and significant advances in women's health worldwide.
