Green North Sea Shipping Corridor

Lead Participant: PORT OF TYNE AUTHORITY

Abstract

The project aims to establish a Green Shipping Corridor (GSC) between the Ports of Tyne (UK) and Ijmuiden (Netherlands), focusing on decarbonising the route currently served by ageing vessels. This initiative aligns with DFDS's commitment to sustainability, targeting a significant reduction in CO2 emissions by transitioning to methanol-fuelled RoRo/RoPax vessels.

**Project Scope and Objectives**

The primary goals include assessing the operational feasibility of using methanol-powered vessels, determining the necessary landside infrastructure for fuelling and electrification, analysing the fuel supply chain, and evaluating the economic and environmental benefits. The project will build on DFDS's pre-feasibility studies and leverage significant previous research by the Port of Tyne, Port of Ijmuiden and other consultancies.

**Main Objectives:**

1. Assess berthing and cargo handling capabilities for larger methanol vessels.
2. Evaluate landside infrastructure requirements, including fuelling and electrification assets.
3. Identify and analyse the fuel value chain.
4. Evaluate economic and environmental benefits, and relevant regulations and policies.
5. Produce a comprehensive GSC business case and delivery plan.
