Step into Cyber 2025
Lead Participant:
UNIVERSITY OF NOTTINGHAM
Abstract
_Step Into Cyber_ events promote cyber security career pathways to post-16 and undergraduate students via interactive full-day events in the East Midlands. Hosted at different locations across the region, the events are open to participants from local secondary schools, colleges and universities. The events are delivered by the University of Nottingham, in partnership with local and national stakeholders, drawing from the cyber industry, professional bodies and graduate communities.
The events are designed to:
* **Attract students from diverse backgrounds and skillsets:** Primary project beneficiaries will be post-16 secondary school and college students (e.g. helping to inform and influence those potential to consider progression to cyber security/computer science undergraduate courses), and existing undergraduate students, who could pursue postgraduate studies, professional certifications, and/or cyber security careers.
* **Raise awareness and aspirations on cyber security career pathways:** Speakers and exhibitors are confirmed from a range of relevant organisations (e.g. CompTIA, CIISec, the UK Cyber Security Council, and ISC2) to showcase different career pathways, and professional journeys.
Each event will include a combination of talks and panel discussions, delivered by a mix of established and early career cyber practitioners, alongside an exhibition during which attendees can discuss in more detail with the presenters and exhibitors, as well as participate in interactive activities.
The events will be relevant to participants from both computing and non-computing backgrounds, and will highlight the diversity of cyber careers. While some cyber roles are closely linked to computing and IT, various others draw upon a range of other topics (e.g. law, mathematics, psychology, finance). The events will explore the career routes open from these different perspectives.
For those interested the events will also offer the opportunity for follow-on mentorship from our speakers and other relevant cyber professionals. This may range from informal discussion to more structured career planning, with a range of mentors available to be matched to the area of cyber security that students find interesting.
The events are also open to careers advisors wishing to know more about cyber careers.
