Hispanic Enterprise in the Age of Reason: the Trade in American Cotton

Lead Research Organisation: University of Sussex
Department Name: Sch of History, Art History & Philosophy

Abstract

Between 1760 and 1802 Spain adapted to obtaining its cotton, previously acquired in the Mediterranean, from its American empire. The project clarifies how this success was achieved by focusing on two components of the development: the supplying of the cotton from America and the creation of a cotton market within Spain. By demonstrating a successful response to economic opportunities it challenges 'black legend' views of Spanish entrepreneurial ineptitude.
