Abstract
This project focuses on popular music-making in an English city and examines how musicians use, experience, interpret and value their material and sonic environment and represent it through sounds, lyrics, visual images and speech; how music-making influences the urban environment; and how music is influenced by that environment and changes to it resulting from city planning, policy-making and regeneration.
The project explores music's specific role and significance in relation to debates and struggles over culture and urban regeneration, and it considers what music reveals about how and why cities matter, how they are lived and made meaningful, characterised and distinguished.
