Investigating galaxy evolutionary processes through large integral field spectroscopic surveys

Lead Research Organisation: University of Cambridge
Department Name: Physics

Abstract

The project will consist in the analysis of extensive integral field spectroscopic data, which will be used to obtain
spatially resolved information on the physical properties of galaxies (e.g. kinematics, stellar
populations, gas excitation, metallicity), which will provide important constraints on the primary
processes driving galaxy evolution, in different mass ranges and in different environments.
The bulk of the work is expected to exploit the extensive SDSS4-Manga survey, which is providing integral field optical spectra for thousands of local galaxies. It time allows, the project may possibly be extended to the analysis of near-IR integral field spectra of distant galaxies, to investigate the evolution of the galaxy formation processes throughout the cosmic epochs.
