Momentum Analysis at LHCb

Lead Research Organisation: University of Liverpool
Department Name: Physics

Abstract

Analysis will be performed in conjunction with the LHCb group at Liverpool using data from the second run of the experiment at CERN. Initially, code will be written using Python to construct a momentum calibration for Z bosons created in collisions. This is important as the calibrations performed in ROOT are for particles at much lower momentum so a second calibration is required to ensure measurements are accurate for heavier particles. It is hoped that it will later be possible to combine the two calibrations to eliminate the need to correct data after it has been received by an institution. Work on the Z particle momentum scale will then lead into Electro-weak analysis, for example performing investigations relating to WW production.

PI Contribution CERN user at the LHCb experiment as a member of the Electroweak working group at the University of Liverpool. LHCb data is used for analysis. I am also a liaison to the Tracking and Alignment working group and take shifts as an expert on call for the LHCb VELO while the LHC is running. The Liverpool group also performs regular internal reviews of collaboration papers before they are sent to journals.
Collaborator Contribution The LHCb Collaboration provides data for my analysis. I have also received training on software and training to become an expert on call.
