Searches for Higgs boson pair production at the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) with the ATLAS experiment

Abstract

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN will be undergoing an upgrade at the end of 2022 which will increase its delivered energy and probe the new energy frontier. The Higgs boson self coupling is an important parameter predicted by the standard model of particle physics that is still yet to be discovered. This study looks for di-Higgs production in the promising bbyy final state, with one Higgs decaying to a b and anti-b quark and the 2nd to a pair of photons. I have developed a method based on weights to exploit the low statistics available. Also implemented a Boosted Decision Tree (BDT) to further increase the chance of detecting the HH->bbyy signal from the huge backgrounds expected at the HL-LHC.
