Derivation of bovine IPSC derived macrophages

Lead Research Organisation: University of Edinburgh
Department Name: The Roslin Institute

Abstract

New gene transfer strategies enable reprogramming of somatic cells to an induced pluripotential state with stem cell characteristics. Such induced pluripotential cells (IPSC) can be differentiated in vitro down defined lineages to specific cell types. We are exploiting this methodology to design and establish novel in vitro disease models for bovine TB and Salmonella, contributing to research into animal food security.

Form Of Engagement Activity A formal working group, expert panel or dialogue
Part Of Official Scheme? No
Geographic Reach Local
Primary Audience Postgraduate students
Results and Impact I was a member of a panel discussion for Postgraduate and Undergraduate students relating to how best to talk about the use of animals in research. The audience reported a better understanding of how to discuss the use of animals in there research and animal research in general (including the use of alternative models etc).

Description Roslin Institute Open Day - "Routes to Research"
Form Of Engagement Activity Participation in an activity, workshop or similar
Part Of Official Scheme? No
Geographic Reach Local
Primary Audience Schools
Results and Impact I was involved with setting up/running a "Routes to Research" stand. While the focus of the stand was more general (different ways of getting involved with research science), I used my own example and current project as a case study. With a lot of pupils hoping to become veterinarians, knowledge that funders like the BBSRC fund veterinary research also made students consider research science in a way they may not have previously.

Results and Impact This event gave members of the public an opportunity to discuss with us, the specifics of our research. The audience led discussion allowed them to address the interests and concerns they had regarding our work and science more generally. The audience feedback was positive and people commented that discussion of specific contexts gave them a greater understanding of the importance of the work being done by research scientists.
