The connection between active galactic nuclei and galaxy formation.

Abstract

Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are thought to play a major role in halting star-formation in the largest galaxies. However, their origin and growth are as yet poorly understood. This project will look at the growth of (AGN) in both hydrodynamical simulations and in semi-analytic models (SAMs), constrain and refine those models by comparison with existing observational data, and make predictions for Euclid/WFIRST.

Some specific sub-projects include:
* Looking at black hole/AGN growth in the EAGLE suite of simulations;
* Looking at black hole/AGN growth in the L-Galaxies SAM;
* Contrasting both of the above with observations;
* Adapting EAGLE and/or L-Galaxies to better reproduce the observed evolution of AGN;
* Exploring the role of AGN in quenching star-formation.
