Commissioning a Triple Foil Plunger to Measure the Lifetime of Exotic Nuclear States

Lead Research Organisation: University of Manchester
Department Name: Physics and Astronomy

Abstract

A triple foil plunger device has been designed and constructed at the University of
Manchester to study the lifetimes of exotic nuclei. A commissioning experiment to
measure the known lifetime of the 4+ decay in 156Dy has been proposed. The commissioning
experiment will test beam time requirements and compare this to existing two
foil plunger. Current estimates predict an improvement by a factor of 3. Additionally,
the lifetimes of the 2+ to 0+ and 4+ to 2+ transitions in 112Te have been measured
using data from the DPUNS plunger. The lifetimes were found to be
