Modification to decellularized Extracellular Matrix tissues to improve their vascular performance as a tissue engineered scaffold

Lead Research Organisation: University of Edinburgh
Department Name: Sch of Engineering

Abstract

My study will focus on how tissue can be decellularized in a manner which helps the attachment of new cells. The demand for full organ transplants is rising, increasing the need in technological developments in biomedical engineering. An appropriate method to decellularizing tissue (small intestine submucosa) will be found with a focus on modifying the structure to aide cell attachment. New cells will then be added to the scaffold with the aim to get good all round attachment and subsequent growth. Achieving this will be a step towards growing organs tailored to each patient and reducing the burden on transplanted organs
