Active matter models of tissue growth and cancer

Lead Research Organisation: University of Bristol
Department Name: Mathematics

Abstract

Active materials are condensed matter systems self-driven out of equilibrium by
components that convert stored energy into movement. They have generated much interest
recently, both as inspiration for new smart materials and as a framework to understand
aspects of cell motility. They are characterised by interesting non-equilibrium collective
phenomena, and provide a new laboratory to explore fundamental concepts of nonequilibrium
physics. This project involves using ideas from active matter to make new
mathematical models of growing tissue and to explore the mechanisms of cancer tumour
growth and proliferation.
