Abstract

Brief description of the context of the research including potential impact;

The context is the development of an experimental quantum information processor based on trapped ions.

Aims and objectives

The aim is to build up a new experimental apparatus in which manipulation of ions by microwave fields is the main method to implement quantum logic.

Novelty of the research methodology

The near-field microwave method is itself relatively novel, having been exhibited at high fidelity in only one laboratory to date. A major feature of the new apparatus is a cryogenic system which will reduce electric field noise and permit lower background pressure to be reached.

Description My research team has been able to trap and efficiently cool ions of the Ca43 isotope using lasers at a field of 28.8 mT for the first time. We have also been able to perform coherent qubit operations via microwaves. Additionally, we have been able to use resolved sideband cooling to prepare ions close to their motional ground state.

Another focus of our experiment is the operation of a surface trap at cryogenic temperatures. We demonstrated successful cooldown of our trap to temperatures of both liquid nitrogen and helium and were able to collect data on trap characteristics at these temperatures.
Exploitation Route The progress so far shows that Ca43 ions at this magnetic field strength are viable candidates for quantum computing.
