Advanced laser sources for Sensing and Quantum Applications

Lead Research Organisation: Imperial College London
Department Name: Physics

Abstract

The project work will address ground-breaking aspects of laser technology to enable new applications, particularly in Remote Sensing and Quantum Technologies. The project will investigate and develop new classes of diode-pumped lasers based on vibronic solid-state materials (e.g. Alexandrite) whose broadband tunability enables many real-world applications. A second option for research is direct diode laser in gain-switched mode for short pulse laser lidar. Emphasis will be on developing low-cost and compact laser formats matched to the application needs. The work will progress and build on the already groundbreaking initial work at Imperial College (>26W in diode-pumped Alexandrite, 20-times higher than previous results). The scope of the PhD work should provide the opportunity for significant groundbreaking contribution to the scientific field in this area and an excellent training in experimental and theoretical techniques and broader understanding of applications and markets for laser-based instrumentation.
