Computational Physics of Liquid Crystal Composites

Lead Research Organisation: University of Edinburgh
Department Name: Sch of Physics and Astronomy

Abstract

The project involves large scale simulations of three dimensional liquid crystal systems. These are done by adapting code developed at the University of Edinburgh in collaboration with the EPCC and by writing original code.

The main objective of the project is to investigate a new type of soft matter consisting of droplets and colloids
dispersed and suspended within liquid crystals. In addition, binary mixtures in which one of the materials is liquid crystalline will also be investigated through simulations.

This work aims to produce materials that facilitate higher levels of control of the properties of the materials in addition to materials that display novel and unusual responses to fields and flow. Additionally, the droplets in liquid crystal suspensions are thought to have potential use in the development of new-generation lasers.
