Development of multiscale and multiphysics model of the human heart for the study of cardiac arrhythmias

Lead Research Organisation: University of Manchester
Department Name: Physics and Astronomy

Abstract

Cardiac diseases are one of the top killer causing sudden death and morbidity. However, due to the nonlinear dynamics nature of the heart, it is a grand challenge to predict the initiation and maintenance of cardiac arrhythmias. In this project, we shall take a novel approach of high-performance computing to investigate the mechanisms underlying the genesis and control of cardiac arrhyhthmias. This will be conducted to develop 3D anatomically accurate and electrophysiologically accurate model of the heart, using which impacts of gene mutations on impairing cardiac functions will be investigated. The output of the study will provide novel mechanistic insights into understanding the functions of the heart in normal and abnormal conditions, which will be helpful to design novel anti-arrhythmic strategies.
