The potential of nutraceutical based senolytics in targeting senescent cells and inducing senoptosis in vitro

Lead Research Organisation: University of Leicester
Department Name: Neuroscience, Psychology and Behaviour

Abstract

As the populations grow older, the functioning of cells, tissues and organs begins to decline. Cell cycle arrested, so-called senescent cells, contribute to the aging process. Recent approaches to target these cells has led to the characterisation of so-called senolytics, compounds which can effectively reverse the detrimental cellular phenotype. This project will draw on joint cell culture records to investigate in vitro the use of multiple senolytic compounds, which are available as potential nutraceuticals, in clearing senescent cells by inducing senoptosis - death of sencescent cells. We will use hydroxyurea treatment and multiple population doublings to mimic aging in culture for primary mouse and human cells covering systems which are affected in old age. Potential compounds under investigation will include Quercetin, Giloy and Allicin to determine a novel, potential impact in the field of senescence and the understanding of the aging process.
