Abstract
The UK Government has an ambitious target of reducing national CO2 emissions by 80% by 2050, and reducing our use of energy in many areas of life will have to play a major part in meeting this goal. The role that the energy embedded in materials and products might play in energy demand reduction is not well studied. This studentship is concerned with understanding how various publics and decision-makers will respond to innovative proposals for low-carbon product design, governance and use. Many innovations in everyday products involving uptake of new materials and associated business models will occur first in small business organisations. This project will explore perceptions and discourses around sustainability and changed materials use among business decision-makers and other stakeholders (e.g. those involved with the Circular Economy), and what knowledge of public views might imply for their decision making and their perceptions of the risks and opportunities attached to developing new material products and services.

| Results and Impact | I am the secretariat for the group including convening group meetings, managing the delivery of operational functions of meetings, e.g. agendas, minutes, venues, co-ordinating access to reports, presentations and discussion notes, developing and co-ordinating an online discussion forum and co-ordinating responses to Government policy consultations. The aim of the CERIG is for members to work together to connect complementary expertise and experiences to facilitate circular economy innovation and research in Wales. This is to be achieved through the following objectives: • Establishing a forum to share good practice and facilitate knowledge exchange between academia, business and policy makers. • Encouraging and supporting collaboration to increase circular economy research capacity in Welsh institutions. • Engaging with industry to develop industry led research. • Providing evidence to inform Government policy and programmes. • Showcasing Wales' circular economy outputs internationally, thus supporting the development of international partnerships. • Collaborating on curriculum development and training. • Working with the Global Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE) network (acknowledged by the United Nations University) to share learning and good practice at regional, national and international levels. Membership is open to Higher Education Institutions (HEI), industry representative bodies, Government representatives and publicly funded research, innovation and knowledge transfer organisations in Wales. CERIG has been used to obtain feedback on the development of the future-proofing toolkit developed as part of the placement with Welsh Government. Furthermore, activities continue to be undertaken to inform policy. For example I orchestrated a submission to Welsh Government on their packaging EPR consultation and have established a working group meeting to provide input into the Welsh Government circular economy strategy currently out for consultation. |
