Abstract

An interdisciplinary framework for disaggregate assessment of productivity and well-being impacts of digital technologies on knowledge workers in nontraditional settings (ITINERANT)

The overall aim of the PhD research will be to develop new ways of embedding emerging qualitative and quantitative evidence regarding impacts of digitisation and connectivity into appraisal and evaluation frameworks for investments in infrastructure. Towards this end, the first objective will be to utilise social science methods and theories to explore case studies enabled through the CASE partnership. Accompanied by training in the mobile collaboration technology, this will permit in-depth understanding of productivity and well-being impacts of digital technologies by knowledge workers in non-traditional settings. The second objective will be to identify and fill key gaps in the existing investment and appraisal methodologies. The final objective will be to develop advanced disaggregate statistical and econometric modelling methodologies to address the aforementioned shortcomings by incorporating interdisciplinary input into appraisal and evaluation methodologies for infrastructure investments.

Description the overall aim of the PhD research is to develop new ways of embedding emerging qualitative and quantitative evidence regarding impacts of digitisation and connectivity into appraisal and evaluation frameworks for personal productivity and well-being. So far we have completed a qualitative study where we define factors of productivity for mobile workers. As next step we will you these findings in an empirical framework which we are currently working on.
Exploitation Route Knowing more about productivity of mobile workers will be useful in a large number of disciplines. It will help policymakers investing in transportation, at the same time disciplines as management studies and psychology will benefit from the findings. On a last note this work is very relevant in view of innovations as autonomous driving.

PI Contribution The aim of this collaboration was to build a framework for assessment factors of productivity for mobile workers. We successfully did so, and this collaboration will lead to a paper. I personally brought to the collaborations the notions from my previous qualitative work on the topic. Also I primarily worked on the conceptual framework, design of questionnaire and data analysis design.
Collaborator Contribution During the time at TU Delft I worked with Professor Caspar Chorus and Dr. Erik Molin. Professor Chorus did the main work of supervision while I was there. He directly contributed in building the conceptual framework at the base of our paper. In addition he closely supervised the structuring of the Structural Equation Modelling framework based on that conceptual model. Dr. Erik Molin closely worked with me in the structuring of the questionnaire.
Impact The output of this collaboration will be a joint paper between Imperial College and TU Delft. The paper is about factors of productivity of mobile workers, and in the specific of knowledge workers. With this purpose we build a conceptual framework with the purpose of defining the process of decision and the factors that make a mobile worker productive. The purpose is also to deconstruct and observe separately these factors. On this conceptual framework we adapt a SEM (structural equation model), and a questionnaire. The questionnaire will be administered to mobile workers asking for details of their previous trips, motivations of the trips and personal details. The paper will be a significant contribution in transport engineering, as there is currently very little data available about productivity of mobile working. At the same time it will be an important contribution for policy makers while evaluating transport infrastructure investment. Finally it will also be interesting for management and it studies, as it will offer an insight on mobile work and use of ICT.
