Grid Stabilisation Using Multi-Infeed HVDC in Low Inertia

Abstract

Power systems of the future are likely
to include vast numbers of HVDC converters providing power to the system from
interconnected countries. These converters will change the dynamic performance of
power systems but can also be used to stabilise systems if controlled properly to
exploit their flexibility. This project will design new types of controller in order to
effectively stabilise power systems making full use of new technologies. The project
will assess different control design approaches and system identification methods to
ensure that any developed controllers can be widely applied in practical industrial
situations. Extensive mathematical analysis and control theory will be applied to
ensure the robustness of the proposed solutions.
